East Kent Golding Hops belong to the Golding Family of varieties, and is considered a premium hops that is celebrated in the U.K. and the U.S. Kent is a Region in England, home to Canterbury, and is where this variety was brought to the market in 1790. Also known as Canterbury Hops by some, although others will dispute this fact. East Kent Goldings gracefully defines the English Pale Ales and Ales produced by the region, it is quintessentially English.

East Kent Golding Hops thrives for aroma additions any time throughout the boil or during dry hopping. This variety has an alpha acid rating of 4.5%-6.5% keeping its bitterness on the low side in beer. It is often complimented with Fuggle Hops in English brew recipes. The aroma is sweet-tempered, savory, and affable. This hops has scents of sweet citrus fruits, and redolence of nectarous flowers. It has relatively high humulene oil content, and this is preserved by avoiding early kettle additions.

East Kent Golding hops produces large cones that are loose. Harvesting is not as easy as working with compact cones, and means that timing becomes more crucial. It is actually a fairly low producing plant, and has susceptibility to Downy Mildew and Hop Mosaic Virus, making it not the farmers dream. However, its demand by beer makers, and the love for East Kent Golding means that it will live on for time to come.

Usage:
Aroma. Regarded for centuries as England’s finest hop, EKG has been a spotlight flavor in the profiles of hoppy ales from the British Isles: IPA, pale ale, and bitter. It’s used at lower rates to subtler effect in Scottish and other darker, maltier ales.

Aroma & Flavor Characteristics:
Flowery with citrus peel or citrus candy overtones and a herbaceous, spring meadow-like undercurrent. Gentle and refined, dry hopping can bring forth its citrus aspects alongside a fresh grassy note.
