Spalt Select Hops was bred as a cross between Spalt and Hallertauer Mittlefrüh by the Hops Research Institute in Hull, Germany. Its origination is circa late 80's and was aimed to replace the Spalt variety by providing stronger growing characteristics, which is evident in its yield.
Spalt Select is classified with the noble varieties due to its low co-humulone content. It has a low alpha acid rating at 3.5%-5.5% and is an aromatic variety. The fragrance is mild and closely resembles Spalt with a slight spicyness. It is also comparable to Saaz Hops and is ideal for Lagers, Pilsners, and other German-Style beers.
Spalt Select was a success towards its better growing potential. It yields 1602-1780 lbs.acre and carries tolerance to Verticillium Wilt as well as Downy Mildew. Spalt, Tettnanger, and Saaz hops are all suitable substitutes, however Spalt Select is available on the shelves of coolers and walk-ins on the market.
